I recently attended a workshop on intimate male portraiture, taught by the talented, detail-orientated and insightful Kevin Lowery of Kevin Lowery Photography. Kevin is based in Atlanta Georgia, where he resides with his husband and son, but travels the world shooting weddings, intimate portraits, teaching classes and being a genuinely amazing human. His work has been huge in normalizing intimate male portraiture and helping men build confidence as well as break down negative societal laws of masculinity.
Kevin's workshop opened my eyes to an aspect of boudoir that I had not yet explored much, which was to capture all the details of a person, even the most seemingly insignificant. I always approached boudoir photography with simple poses and more movement as I feel like it captures who they are better. I captured details such as lips, jewelry and eyes but not much past that. Kevin taught me to look for the little details that define us as people and expose our souls. These are the details that tell the stories of our lives and give us character. As a wedding photographer I am constantly telling stories as they unfold around me, telling stories fills my heart and is a big part of why I am a photographer. Being able to combine storytelling and intimate portraits really gives new meaning to boudoir for me. Capturing the unique sexiness, raw emotions and individual characteristics of each person I photograph is, and always will be at the top of my list.
A shout out to Kevin Lowery for taking the time to pass on your wisdom, vision and heart. You are an important factor in not only building confidence for the men and women you photograph but also helping tear down the walls that imprison men into brooding masculinity.
BTW Happy Pride Month!
